In the world of architecture, firm culture can sometimes be traditional and slow to adapt, especially when it comes to how new ideas and talent are integrated. However, at a particular firm, excitement is brewing as they embark on a new chapter that promises to bring a fresh perspective. Through their recent acquisition of Atlas Architects, GSBS Architects is continuing to build a culture that prioritizes nimbleness, collaboration, and a refreshing approach to architecture and design.
Last October, Jason Foster (BS ’97, M.Arch ’99) Co-founder and partner of Atlas Architects approached GSBS President and CEO, Kevin Miller (BS ’86, M.Arch ’88), about merging firms. Before launching Atlas in 2008, Foster started his career with GSBS and 16 years later, when it was time for another change, GSBS’s culture and approach to design created the right opportunity to benefit all involved. “While technically an acquisition, this opportunity is much more about the coming together of like-minded individuals,” expressed Miller.
Though the size of the firms were quite different, their commitment to community, relationships, and investing in people is what made this transition a success. An indicator of that success is that the entire Atlas team, including Foster, has migrated to GSBS and are quickly becoming part of the greater team. The decision wasn’t just about consolidating resources, it was about adding a new energy and fostering an environment that would help everyone thrive.
The merger, while bringing together two firms, is not about expanding the GSBS team. It is about supporting the GSBS culture in a way that continues to prioritize creativity, flexibility, and mentorship. As GSBS approaches 50 years in business, and almost 100 employees across two offices (SLC and Fort Worth, TX), Miller is aware of the potential impact growth and success can have on innovation. Miller and Foster are committed to collaboration and finding the balance between small firm nimbleness and the resources and influence of a larger firm. While Miller expressed his enthusiasm for “the spark” that Atlas’ team is bringing to GSBS, Foster also noted his excitement to work on the same team with planners and landscape architects, “and be able to develop projects more holistically in the same room.”
As the firm looks toward the future, they know that their strength lies not only in their ability to design buildings but in their ability to build a culture that supports and nurtures the growth of everyone. GSBS is making it a practice to include all levels of team members in the design process and embracing their role in developing early professionals’ technical proficiencies, while believing everyone, regardless of title, has the potential to contribute meaningfully to a project. It’s a vision that is reflected in the firm’s approach to design, where every individual is valued for their unique contributions, and where success is a shared goal.
