Graduation Spring 2023

University of Utah General Commencement

Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. MDT

The University of Utah General Commencement will be held Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. MDT in the Jon M. Huntsman Center

General Commencement is the campus-wide opening ceremony, kicking off many events across campus and serving as a collective celebration of the University community and the collective success and accomplishments of the graduating class.

We recommend that you attend, as this year’s ceremony will feature some exciting changes and additions that should be memorable. For more information about the 2016 University of UtahCommencement, see the Commencement Website.

College Convocation

The College of Architecture + Planning Convocation will be held Friday, May 5, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. MDT at the University Union Ballroom.

The CA+P Convocation, in the College’s tradition, is a time for graduates and their families to celebration and recognize the accomplishments of all involved. The convocation lasts approximately 90 minutes. The main features of the convocation are student speakers  and recognition of student achievements. The primary event, of course, is the individual recognition of each graduate.

Additional College of Architecture + Planning Convocation Information:

Line-up of Graduates

All graduates should have a cap and gown (and hood for graduate students) to participate in the convocation. These may be ordered at the University Bookstore.  Graduates should gather on the patio on the east side of the Architecture Building no later than 7:45 a.m. Graduates will be given cards on which to write their names (no nicknames), as they will be read at commencement. Each graduate should retain the card until crossing the stage. The procession will form by major and degree and proceed across campus to the Union at 8:40 a.m.

Guest Seating
There is unlimited seating; no tickets are required.  The convocation procession will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Families and guest should be seated prior to that time. Special seating arrangements for guests in wheelchairs or those having difficulty walking are available in the Ballroom in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Students or guests with disabilities may also give reasonable prior notice and request accommodations through the Center for Disability Services at (801) 581-5020 (voice/TDD).

An American Sign Language interpreter will be at the event and the proceedings will be closed captioned on the Ballroom's video monitors.

Campus parking lots may be used at no charge during convocation and commencement ceremonies. Families are encouraged to drop off those who cannot walk long distances at the east entrance of the Union Building before parking. The closest parking to the Union Building is the parking lot directly east of the building. Guests may also park in other lots and catch a University shuttle to the Union Building. Since parking can be difficult during this busy time on campus, we also encourage families to ride UTA TRAX and to take buses to graduation. Access UTA route maps and schedules here.

Cap and Gown Orders
Student graduates can pay for and pick up graduation regalia at the University Bookstore. See the University Campus Bookstore website for additional information.

Photographers from Island Photography will be at convocation.  Students will be able to order photos through the company's website.

Diplomas are mailed to graduates within three months of graduation.
