Division of Games
The Division does not require students to purchase laptops or tablets. We have an open-use lab in BLG 72 for undergrads to use, as well as a tablet lab. All the software needed is loaded onto these computers and accessible for all Division-enrolled students.
If a student does want to purchase a device, we have suggested spec listed below.
· No model or brand requirement
· 10th Gen i5 or i7 processor
· 16 GB of RAM
· Discrete graphics with 8BG of VRam

Students in design-focused majors need a capable computer that can handle graphic-heavy software used in studios, labs, and projects. The information below outlines minimum and recommended hardware to help you choose a laptop or desktop that fits your needs.
Minimum Requirements
These specs will get you through coursework and studio use but may run slower with large files or multitasking.
- Operating System
- Windows 11 (Windows 10 is okay for now, but support ends October 14, 2025 — see below)
- macOS Sonoma 14 or newer (Ventura 13 is supported through Fall 2025)
- Processor (CPU)
- At least a 6-core processor
- Examples: Intel Core i5/i7 (12th gen or newer), AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, or Apple M2
- Memory (RAM)
- 16 GB minimum
- Sufficient for most tasks, but expect slowdowns with complex models or multitasking
- Graphics (GPU)
- Dedicated graphics card with at least 4 GB of video memory (VRAM)
- Required for 3D design, modeling, and rendering tools
- Storage
- 512 GB SSD (solid-state drive) for fast, reliable storage
- Display
- 1920×1080 (Full HD) with accurate colors (100% sRGB recommended)
- Connectivity
- Wi-Fi
Recommended (Future-Proof) Setup
These specs are better suited for advanced coursework, larger projects, and longer device lifespan.
- Operating System
- Latest version of Windows 11
- Latest version of macOS (Sequoia 15 or whatever is current at time of purchase)
- Processor (CPU)
- 12-core or higher
- Examples: Intel Core i7/i9 (14th gen), AMD Ryzen 9 7900X, Apple M4 Pro
- Memory (RAM)
- 32 GB preferred
- 64 GB ideal for rendering, multitasking, or running Windows on a Mac
- Graphics (GPU)
- Dedicated graphics card with 6–8 GB of video memory
- Storage
- 1 TB SSD plus an external backup drive
- Display
- 2560×1440 or 4K resolution, with color calibration support (for design accuracy)
- Connectivity
- Wi-Fi 6E and a Gigabit Ethernet adapter for stable network access
Windows vs. macOS: What to Know
Some key software used in your courses is only available for Windows. If you're considering a Mac, be aware of the following:
- Revit and ArcGIS Pro are Windows-only applications. macOS users will need workarounds to use them.
- Intel-based Macs can run Windows using Boot Camp.
- Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3) cannot run Windows natively. Instead, they require a program called Parallels Desktop, which costs around $100 per year.
- Performance within Parallels is typically 25–40% slower for graphics-heavy programs.
- If using a Mac, we strongly recommend at least an M3 Pro chip with 32 GB RAM for best usability.
Software Availability
Most required software is provided free to students by the college, university, or software vendor.

Operating System Support Reminder
- Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025.
After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates. Using Windows 10 beyond that point could leave your device more vulnerable to malware and other security risks.
We recommend purchasing a computer that comes with Windows 11 or can be upgraded to it. - macOS Ventura (version 13) will likely stop receiving security updates in Fall 2025.
For long-term compatibility, choose a Mac with macOS Sonoma (version 14) or newer.
