Einar Nielsen Field House (FLD H)
375 S 1400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84112The Einar Nielsen Field House is located on the south western end of campus next to the Rice-Eccles stadium.
Undergraduate students enrolled in classes in this building have building and classroom access with their UCard from 6:00 am–9:00 pm Monday through Friday. Undergraduate students not registered for Field house courses will not receive access to the building. Access to the Mezzanine and Third Floor studios is granted only to students enrolled in classes in those areas. Staff, faculty, and graduate/PhD students in Architecture, MDD, and CMP have 24/7 access. If additional after-hours access is needed, fill out the after-hours access form below.

Second Floor
The second floor serves as a vibrant hub for design and planning education, featuring a mix of instructional and exhibition spaces that foster creativity and community engagement.
- Classroom Spaces: The floor includes two to three flexible classrooms that regularly host students from design and planning disciplines. These rooms are equipped to support lectures, workshops, and collaborative learning activities.
- Large Open Exhibit Area: At the heart of the second floor is a spacious open area that is widely used for showcasing student work. This exhibit space is ideal for large-scale presentations, installations, and public displays, offering students a platform to share their projects with peers, faculty, and visitors.




Third Floor
The third floor is a collaborative space designed to support creative exploration, academic research, and interdisciplinary dialogue. It comprises three main areas:
- Studio Space: An open, flexible environment tailored for hands-on design work, project development, and group collaboration for Architecture, Planning and Design students.
- Research Center: A dedicated area for scholarly inquiry, equipped with resources to support advanced research in design and planning.
- Conference Room: A professional setting for meetings, presentations, and seminars, fostering engagement across disciplines.
Additional amenities include:
- Plotter Printers for high-quality large-format printing
- A small kitchenette for convenience during long work sessions
- Restrooms located within the studio area




Mezzanine Level
The mezzanine level is primarily used by freshman and sophomore students. It provides additional studio space that supports early design coursework and project development.
- Studio Workstations: The area includes individual and group workspaces for drawing, modeling, and other design activities.
- Presentation Areas: Students use the space for informal presentations and critiques as part of their coursework.




Plotter Room
The College has 6 plotters for student use. 4 are in the Architecture building in room 131 (next to the first-floor studio), and 2 on the third floor in the Fieldhouse. Students are responsible for their paper, so please check with your professor for their requirements before purchasing.
Access
Plotter Room hours - 6am - 12pm
Access to room 131 and the third floor of the fieldhouse is controlled by card readers. Students will have access to all card readers from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm. If your card is not working to unlock the door, please email CAP-BuildingAccess@utah.edu
Using the Plotter Machines
Rolls can hold up to 44 inch wide paper.
8.5 x 11 and 11 x 14 printing is handled by Red Print. Here is a link to Red Print. Local IT can give very limited support for these printers.
Bring your projects on a USB drive or email projects to yourself to access via the computers.
