In late March, scholarship recipients and donors gathered in the Architecture Building for the College of Architecture and Planning’s annual Gratitude Luncheon, a celebration of scholarship and impact. Centered on the theme, “Champions for Change”, the event featured a gallery walk, student speakers, and highlights from the year.

Displays around the Bailey Gallery included School of Architecture student models, posters of the last decade of DesignBuildUTAH@BLUFF projects, and large-scale artworks by Tom Kass, Professor Emeritus of the School of Architecture. Professor Kass devoted decades to teaching and mentoring students. His beloved art, donated by his son, Thomas Kass, now has a permanent home in the College. Dean Arnab Chakraborty promoted successes across the college’s four units, including expanded Games spaces and the launch of new undergraduate paths in Architecture and Multi-Disciplinary Design. Students from the School of Architecture and the Division of Games also shared the impact scholarships have had on their academic journeys.

“To me, this scholarship represents more than financial support. It represents encouragement, belief, and the generosity of those who want to invest in the next generation of architects. Knowing that alumni and supporters are willing to give back in this way is incredibly meaningful.”(Alexandra Alarcon, M. Arch ’26)

Among the celebrations was the recognition of two new endowments established in 2025. A gift from the Paul T. Walton Jr. Charitable Foundation established the first endowed professorship in the College of Architecture and Planning.  The PT Walton Jr Endowed Professorship which will promote research excellence and a strong commitment to mentoring and teaching within the School of Architecture. This is the largest single gift in both the school’s and the college’s history, marking a major milestone in advancing academic success.

The Archer Family Charitable Corporation Signature Experience Endowment was established to support the School of Architecture undergraduates’ participation in signature experiences.

Its purpose is to remove financial barriers so more students can access experiences outside the traditional studio and broaden perspective through exposure to diverse architecture and cultures. In practice, the endowment will support participation costs such as travel expenses and fees for experiences outside of the Salt Lake valley, whether that is New York, Italy, Japan, or beyond.

These endowments expand opportunities for our students to receive the highest quality education and pursue unique pathways toward their careers. They are a lasting investment made possible by the generosity and vision of our donors who believe in unlocking potential and shaping futures.
